Structural consolidation and conservation of historic turret masonry.

The 2026 works at Castleisland focused on securing the surviving masonry of Castleisland’s south-west turret, where open joints, localised stone loss and voids within the wall core left the structure vulnerable to water and continued deterioration.

Loose areas were repaired and unstable masonry carefully consolidated before the joints were repointed with compatible lime mortar. Grout was introduced into internal voids to strengthen the wall core without unnecessary dismantling, helping the structure regain cohesion while retaining as much original fabric as possible. Exposed wall heads were finished with protective lime flaunching to shed rainwater and reduce future moisture ingress.
