Restoration of a traditional stone farmhouse using lime-based methods.

Layers of later plaster had hidden the original stonework of this 18th-century farmhouse and trapped moisture against its walls. Internal and external coatings were carefully removed by hand, revealing both the craftsmanship and the true condition of the locally sourced masonry beneath. The exposed stone was then gently cleaned using soft brushes and low-pressure water.

Failed mortar was raked out by hand before the walls were repointed with traditional lime mortar and historically appropriate aggregates. Softer NHL 2 mortar was used where greater flexibility was required, with NHL 3.5 selected for areas needing additional durability. Finished to reflect the original joint profiles, the work allows the walls to breathe once again and gives this much-loved rural home back its honest, understated character.
